The actual workflow

1 Lock the page map and character bible

Architecture lock set the Christmas Eve ride story, festive color cover, colorable bonus plates, and maze sequence. Jay and Bella stay locked to the character bible (locs, scooter, Scottie with teal collar) so every plate matches earlier Jay & Bella work.

2 Build topology-proven mazes

A custom maze engine generated nine mazes with BFS-proven unique paths and checkpoints. Answer keys are topology-derived bold solution lines — not ribbons guessed from an image model.

3 Generate character-locked coloring plates

Cover and interior coloring scenes were prompted as colorable line art (and a festively colored cover) with GenerateImage call packs and reference images from the Jay & Bella bible, then post-processed locally to print size. Status notes track each plate (departure, toy floor, carolers/rink, kitchen finale).

4 Assemble KDP interior and cover

Python build scripts assembled the 40-page 8.5 × 11 interior and the cover wrap (spine sized for 40 pages on white paper). QA checks covered maze keys and cover proof overlays before upload.

Steps we could not fully verify

  • Named commercial AI image brand for every plate beyond the GenerateImage call packs in the art notes.
  • KDP keyword-research SaaS (Book Bolt / Publisher Rocket / BookBeam) — not logged for this title.
  • Exact KDP AI-form radio buttons clicked at submit time (follow the same honest AI-generated + edited pattern used on sibling coloring titles).

Where a tool name was not in the production log, we say so instead of inventing one.

Compliance notes

KDP AI disclosure

Coloring plates used generative image tools under character locks and human post-process. Treat images as AI-generated with extensive editing on the KDP form, consistent with sibling Shawn Neville coloring titles.

Maze honesty

Keys come from the maze engine’s proven path, not from AI-drawn “solution ribbons.” That keeps the activity book fair for kids.

What shipped

  • Live Amazon paperback: Jay’s Christmas Eve Ride (ASIN B0HP736XDL).
  • 40-page 8.5 × 11 interior with 9 mazes, coloring scenes, answer keys, and certificate.
  • Full cover wrap with festively colored departure scene.

Lessons

  • Prove maze topology in code before you draw overlay art — kids notice broken puzzles.
  • A character bible plus reference images keeps a series sequel recognizable without redrawing the cast from scratch.
  • Separate “AI coloring plates” from “engineered mazes” in your process notes so disclosure and QA stay clear.
