The actual workflow
1 Lock primary sources before drawing
Every plate sits under real 1600s language from Edward Winslow’s December 1621 letter, Mourt’s Relation, or William Bradford — with modern captions that explain what the source says and what the picture reconstructs. Quote-language locks stop invented dialogue and pumpkin-pie myths.
2 Generate plates in Canva AI, then reject aggressively
New plates and cover art were generated with Canva’s image tools (media IDs logged in the plate prompt record). Rejected attempts included buckled “Pilgrim” shoes, invented bandeau tops, cloned parade faces, and European apples in the wreath. Accepted art was converted to clean line art via local prep scripts (grayscale, upscale, threshold to 1-bit PNG).
3 Retouch for historical register
Local Python retouch passes fixed chimneys (clay-daubed timber, not stone fireplaces), moccasins, dugout canoe details, and cover wreath elements. Cover hires work used tiled Canva re-renders stitched locally when a single upscale was not enough.
4 Build bleed interior + cover; disclose AI
Interior PDF built with bleed (8.625 × 11.25 in). Cover wrap sized for 48 pages. Copyright page states illustrations were made with AI image-generation tools, then selected, edited, and assembled by the author. KDP form: images = AI-generated with extensive editing; text = some sections AI-drafted with editing; quotations themselves are verbatim public-domain text.

Steps we could not fully verify
- Whether Book Bolt or another KDP keyword tool was used beyond the drafted seven keyword phrases in the metadata sheet.
Where a tool name was not in the production log, we say so instead of inventing one.
Compliance notes
KDP AI disclosure
All 21 plates, title wreath, and cover painting are AI-generated then heavily edited. Answer Yes on images. Quotations are not AI — they are public-domain 17th-century text with modernized spelling.
Historical honesty
History note tells readers what the English sources do not say and that no written Wampanoag account of 1621 is known. Do not claim “historically accurate”; the book says “historically grounded.”
