The actual workflow

1 Confirm public-domain status

The Odyssey of Homer, Palmer translation, Houghton Mifflin 1929, illustrated by N. C. Wyeth. US publication 1929 entered the public domain on 1 January 2025. Source notes prefer archive.org / HathiTrust book scans over museum web photos with separate site terms.

2 Crop and clean the plate

Frontispiece plate pulled from the Internet Archive scan, cropped to the artwork, deskewed, dust-cleaned, and white-point matched. Mourning Penelope ships as a fit panel with a mat-cream border so feet, hem, and frieze stay intact at 8×10. No AI upscaling on the master used for the gate.

3 Build Printify-ready panel and mockups

8×10 print-ready panel prepared for the framed product (matte paper, pine frame options). Real Printify framed mockups replace gate composites before listing. Product specs: shatter-proof acrylic, hanging hardware, ships to US addresses.

4 Write Shopify copy and credits

Listing voice is Old Heaven’s mythic register. Required credit stack on the product: artwork/source line, then © 2026 Old Heaven, then the standing AI assistance line (see compliance). Publish on Shopify via the Printify connection.

Steps we could not fully verify

  • Exact Printify blueprint / provider SKU ID for the framed product (listing copy matches Printify framed-print language; admin SKU not copied into this case study).
  • Whether any AI tool touched Shopify marketing copy beyond human edit — artwork itself is a PD scan, not generative fill.

Where a tool name was not in the production log, we say so instead of inventing one.

Compliance notes

Public-domain sourcing

Artwork: N. C. Wyeth, “The Mourning Penelope,” from The Odyssey of Homer, trans. George Herbert Palmer (Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1929). Public domain. Source scan: Internet Archive, odysseyofhomer0000geor_d5m4.

Old Heaven credit block

Listings carry, in order: the source credit above; then © 2026 Old Heaven; then exactly: Made with AI assistance, following human aesthetic, mythic and historical direction.

SFW selection

This Wyeth Odyssey framed print is the Old Heaven SKU featured here. Towels, mugs, boxers, and sexualized apparel are out of scope for MakerPipeline case studies.

What shipped

  • Live Shopify product: The Mourning Penelope N. C. Wyeth Odyssey framed print (1929).
  • 8×10 matte print in White or Black pine frame via Printify-style framed POD.
  • Source-attributed listing copy with public-domain credit.

Lessons

  • For 1929 plates, a book scan beats a random museum JPG — you control rights clarity and caption cropping.
  • Be honest about dpi: ~1850×2400 px is a clean 8×10, not a sharp 16×20. Don’t upscale and pretend.
  • Keep Old Heaven’s credit order consistent: source, © line, then the exact AI assistance sentence.
